A page from the household account book of James V, 1534-1535, with a daily record of the provisions received and used by the royal household. Shown here are purchases of spices (including sugar, saffron and cinnamon) and chandlery (wax and candles). The page is decorated with the Tudor rose, the thistle, a unicorn and Lucretia, the Roman noblewoman in the act of committing suicide (Exchequer records: E31/6).
