Nobleman and politician
Archibald Campbell was tenth earl and first duke of Argyll. His grandfather and father, the eighth and ninth earls respectively, had been executed for their involvement in the civil wars of the seventeenth century. In 1689 he raised a regiment of six hundred men known as Argyll's Regiment of Foot. Several of the companies were involved in the massacre at Glencoe in 1692. He was created duke of Argyll in 1701. He married Elizabeth Talmash or Tollemache from whom he was separated for several years before his death. Much of his personal correspondence has been printed in Carstare's state papers and letters.
