Changes to methodology for excess deaths

The methodology used to calculate excess deaths changed in February 2024. More information on these changes, including figures comparing the old and new methods, can be found on the ONS website.

Key points in this week’s update

  • The provisional total number of deaths registered in Scotland in week 43 of 2024 (21th October to 27th October) was 1,184. This is 153 or 11.4% lower than the expected number of deaths in week 43. There were 22 deaths that mentioned COVID-19.

It has been renamed to better reflect the fact that it includes data on all deaths, plus breakdowns for some key causes.  A breakdown of deaths involving coronavirus  is still included in this publication.
