The National Records of Scotland (NRS) is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.
This accessibility statement applies to www.nrscotland.gov.uk.
National Records of Scotland runs this website. We designed it so as many people as possible can use it.
You should be able to:
- use your web browser to change colours, contrast levels and fonts
- zoom in up to 500% without loss of information
- navigate the website using just a keyboard
- navigate the website using speech recognition software
- listen to the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver)
- access the website using a mobile or tablet
We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.
AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.
This website is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard, due to the non-compliances listed below.
Non-accessible Content
The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reason(s):
non-compliance with the accessibility regulations
Forms
If there’s a change in what is being presented on a page because of an action taken, the screen reader is not informed of the change to the page. This doesn’t meet WCAG 2.1 success criterion 4.1.3 (status messages).
Documents
Some document formats such as PDF, MS Word and Excel may not be fully accessible. We plan to either fix these or replace them with accessible HTML pages.
This fails WCAG success criteria:
- non-text content 1.1.1
- info and relationships 1.3.1
- meaningful sequence 1.3.2
- multiple ways 2.4.5
What we’re doing to improve accessibility
We’re working towards meeting the regulations by:
- using the Scottish Government Design System which has accessible styles, components and patterns
- adopting an HTML-first approach for new content
- any new PDFs, Excel or Word documents we publish will meet accessibility standards
- continuing to provide guidance to staff in creating accessible content
- use automated and manual accessibility testing and monitoring
- being open to suggestions, additions or the reporting of accessibility problems
