Life Expectancy for Administrative Areas within Scotland, 2007-2009

1. Background

1.1 This paper summarises the Registrar General for Scotland’s life expectancy figures for the period 2007-2009 for administrative areas within Scotland and compares these with results for 1997-1999. Life expectancy at birth for all people is presented in this report, although the analysis concentrates on males and females as in previous reports. It reports on the 32 Council areas in Scotland and the 14 NHS Board areas in existence since 1 April 2006. Figures for NHS Board areas prior to this date are available on request for comparison purposes. Table 9 and Table 10 are new, comparing results with 5 years ago. Figures 9a to 9c and Figures 12a to 12c are also new.

1.2 The results for 2007-2009, given in Table 1, Table 2 and Table 3, have been ranked for ease of presentation. For Council areas, this means that ‘1’ is the area with the highest life expectancy and ‘32’ the lowest. Similarly, NHS Board areas are ranked 1 to 14.
