The number of deaths registered in Scotland in the third quarter of this year was 9.2% lower than expected, according to figures published today by National Records of Scotland.
14,435 deaths were recorded between 1 July and 30 September. This is lower than the expected number of 15,895, which is calculated using a method which adjusts for the growing and ageing population.
Phillipa Haxton, Head of Vital Events Statistics at NRS, said:
“The number of deaths was 9.2% lower than our expected number for this time of year.
“Across all age groups, deaths were below expected levels for the third quarter of this year.
“Deaths among females were 9.9% lower and those among males 8.4% lower than expected for this time of year.”
11,785 births were registered in Scotland between 1 July and 30 September. This is 5.5% lower than the five year average for this quarter.
There were 9,619 marriages. This was 6.2 % lower than the quarter three average. Of these, 384 were same-sex marriages, compared with an average of 372.
