The statistics in this publication are for flow-based migration estimates for the year ending 30 June (mid-year) which show people moving to or from an area.
Main Points
- Net migration into Scotland in the year to mid-2023 was higher than any other year in the past decade.
- Between the years to mid-2021 and mid-2022, net migration more than doubled, from +22,200 to +55,100. In the year to mid-2023, it increased further with 61,600 more people moving to Scotland than leaving.
- Total migration into Scotland is a combination of international migration and migration from other parts of the UK. The increase in total migration was largely due to an increase in international migration.
- International net migration has increased from +13,300 in the year to mid-2021 to +42,600 in the year to mid-2022, and to +47,700 in the year to mid-2023. These increases were due to a combination of more in-migration and lower levels of out-migration.
- Average net migration from other parts of the UK has been fairly stable over the last decade, averaging +10,000 people. It was higher in the year to mid-2023, at +13,900 people.
