The Book of Scottish Connections is a public record for people all over the world, who have a Scottish connection.
It lets you record an event in in our Book that you registered abroad. You can record:
- births
- deaths
- marriages
- civil partnerships
A commemorative copy of the record (and the Scottish connection) will be preserved as a part of the family history records held by National Records of Scotland.
Who can apply to record an entry
An entry can be recorded in the Book if the event occurred outside Scotland, and either:
- one of their parents or maternal/paternal grandparents were born in Scotland
- you were normally residing in Scotland at the time the event took place
How to apply
Complete and send us the application form for the event you want to register. You can download:

- sign your application digitally or with a typed signature
- print it and sign it in ink
You can then scan it and email it to our team, or post it to us.
What to send with a completed application form
Each application must be accompanied by:
- a copy of the relevant birth, death, marriage or civil partnership certificate
- a translation into English of the information contained in that certificate (if applicable)
Cost to record an entry
The fee for applying to record an entry is £40. This also includes provision of a certificate.
The fee for an additional copy of the certificate is £15.
