The statistics and data we produce need to meet certain standards. We also consult users of our statistics.
Accredited status
Unless otherwise stated, our statistics are designated as ‘Accredited Official Statistics’ (previously ‘National Statistics’).
This means they comply with the Code of Practice for Statistics standards of:
- trustworthiness
- quality
- value
It is our responsibility to maintain compliance with the standards expected. If we become concerned about whether statistics are still meeting the appropriate standards, we will discuss any concerns with the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) promptly.
Accredited Official Statistics status can be:
- removed at any point when the highest standards are not maintained
- reinstated when standards are restored
How we consult users of our statistics
ScotStat
ScotStat is a network for users and providers of Scottish Official statistics. It aims to improve communication amongst those interested in particular statistics and facilitate the setting up of working groups on specific statistical issues. You can access ScotStat from the statistics section of the Scottish Government website.
Users can also contact us directly if they:
- need any further information about our statistics
- have any suggestions for improvement
Revisions and Corrections
Our statistical outputs are sometimes subject to revisions or corrections.
Revisions are generally planned, although there can be occasions when they are unplanned, and are the result of either improvements in statistical methods or the availability of additional data. For example, annual population estimates are revised after a census to take account of the additional information gained from the census results.
Corrections are unplanned and occur when errors in either the statistical data or methodology are found after release of the data.
We treat revisions and corrections according to the Scottish Government (SG) Statistician Group Revisions Policy, (available on the SG website), which follows the Code of Practice for Statistics.
Details of any revisions or corrections of our statistical outputs will be included in the relevant publication page of this website.
