Please always refer to the latest mid-year estimates and population time series data to get the latest data available for Scotland. This data superseded the data given below at the specified date.

The publications for mid-year population estimates below are the originals produced by the National Records of Scotland (NRS) and contain errors that mainly affected the age distribution of the estimates for 2002 to 2014. They occurred because of an issue with an input data set used in the calculation of the mid-year estimates, as well as minor unrelated processing errors. The errors had no effect on the total population of Scotland and the 2011 mid-year population estimates are not affected. The errors in the 2002 to 2010 population estimates were partly resolved by the retrospective revisions made to these estimates as a result of the 2011 Census.

The tables for these three publications have been corrected and can be found in the Corrected tables for mid-2012, mid-2013 and mid-2014 page. Where there are also tables showing the impact of the errors.

Further details of the errors can be found in the frequently asked questions document below, created when the errors were discovered in October 2015.
