NRS Vital Events statistical databases use a range of code lists to record information consistently. For example, some databases include separate variables for different types of geography such as council areas (local authorities) and health boards. Each variable stores the relevant code value for that record.
Some codes are used only in specific datasets. For example, cause of death codes are used only in deaths data. Other codes are used across several datasets, such as geography code lists.
Some codes are based on national or international classifications, including:
NRS also applies its own codes to classify certain variables, such as:
· marital status
· employment status
· ethnicity
· country of birth
A list of codes used in the VE statistics is available from the NRS website.
