Once we make an entry in our registers, it:
- sits as a public record (apart from the Stillbirth register)
- will usually remain unchanged
However, we can sometimes correct information found to have been incorrect at the time of registration.
We maintain a Register of Corrections where we enter amendments to the other registers.
What we can correct
Some changes are possible if we get sufficient evidence. For example:
- correcting a factual error at the time of registration
- cancelling and re-registering a birth entry where the parents subsequently marry or civilly partner
- correcting a marriage that was found to be void after being registered
What we cannot correct
You cannot apply for a correction if the circumstances changed after you registered the event. For example, if you change your occupation after registering your child’s birth.
Requesting a correction
You can request a correction if you:
- registered an event
- believe that the entry contains information that was incorrect at the time it was registered
You can contact us to request a correction.
