Methodology

The small area population estimates are derived from the 2001 Census using the cohort-component method where data zones were created by aggregating census output areas. A brief description of the methodology is outlined in the paper '2001-2004 Small Area Population Estimates – Methodology' which accompanied the publication of the 2001-2004 SAPEs.

More information on the data zone geography can be found on the Scottish Neighbourhood statistics Data Zones Background Information page of the Scottish Government website.
