Key Points

  • There were 11,061 births registered in Scotland between 1 April and 30 June 2023. This is 9.1 per cent lower than the quarter two average of 12,164.
  • At 14,987 the number of deaths in 2023 quarter two is 7.3 per cent higher than the quarter two average of 13,963.
  • The age-standardised mortality rate for 2023 quarter 2 was 1,079 per 100,000 population. This was 1.4 per cent higher than the five year average for quarter 2. This rate takes into account the growing and ageing population and is therefore the best indicator of the direction of the mortality trend.

  • There were 50 infant deaths (4.5 per 1000 live births), 21.4% above the quarter two average of 41.
  • There were 7,628 marriages in quarter two of 2023. This was 0.5% lower than the recent average.
  • There were 261 same-sex marriages, compared with a five-year average of 247.
  • Since June 2021 mixed-sex couples have been able to form a civil partnership. Of the 184 civil partnerships registered in the second quarter of 2023, 146 involved mixed-sex couples.
  • There were 38 same-sex civil partnerships, compared with a five-year average of 19.
