Revisions and Corrections
Our statistical outputs are sometimes subject to revisions or corrections.
Revisions are generally planned, although there can be occasions when they are unplanned, and are the result of either improvements in statistical methods or the availability of additional data. For example, annual population estimates are revised after a census to take account of the additional information gained from the census results. Details of planned revisions are held within the individual 'About this publication' files alongside each publication.
Corrections are unplanned and occur when errors in either the statistical data or methodology are found after release of the data.
We treat revisions and corrections according to the Scottish Government (SG) Statistician Group Revisions Policy, (available on the SG website), which follows the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.
Any of our statistical outputs that have recently been revised or corrected will be highlighted on this page and linked to the appropriate section of this website.
Projected Population of Scotland (2020-based): International Migration Variant
Following a request from HM Treasury (HMT) and the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have published a new 2020-based population projection variant. The release includes new international migration estimates and assumptions that ONS have produced since the publication of the original projections in January 2022. The new assumptions are higher than those used in the original projections, which means the projections for Scotland (and the UK as a whole) are higher than those previously published.
ONS and NRS advise users to use these new 2020-based interim national population projections: estimated international migration variant instead of the 2020-based interim national population projections published in January 2022. This is because this release includes more recent estimates of international migration in the averages used to calculate the short- and long-term international migration assumptions.
We also plan to update our mid-2021 population estimates, and the migration tables that are published alongside them, to reflect the revised migration figures. We will share a date for this in due course.
