About our Geography

Geography branch provides geographic data and services that support the production of high quality statistics.

We hold a large amount of geographically referenced information about Scotland’s population. Our digital products and related indexes allow information from different sources to be mapped and compared for a wide variety of purposes. For example our postcode geography allocates addresses to small areas which can build up flexibly into larger areas for analysis or comparison.

Statistics are published for administrative, health, electoral and other geographic areas. Many of these geographic areas have been established by statute and have been amended over time. Unfortunately many do not align with each other which makes it difficult to compare statistics between geographies and over time. Our geographic products can help with the comparison of statistics.

The following pages give you background information on the work that we do and introduce you to the policies and practices that support our work.
