Notes on use of index

The index contains the names of all settlements appearing in this report. If there is any doubt about the identity of a settlement listed in the index, users should check the location of the area on the map. The map column lists the number of the map or maps on which the area is shown.

Grid Reference column is given as an aid to locating an area on the map. A four figure Ordnance Survey National Grid reference for a point near the centre of each area is listed in this column. The first and second numbers relate to the horizontal margins (eastings) of the maps and the third and the fourth numbers to the vertical margins (northings). The first and third numbers show the 10km square in which the area lies - these squares are shown on the maps in this Report - and the second and fourth give a reference to the nearest 1 km. The same reference grid is used an all Ordnance Survey maps, though with an additional preface to denote 100 km squares.
