Key Findings:

  • In 2023 the number of households in Scotland was estimated to be 2.54 million, 14% higher than in 2003.
  • The number of households increased by 0.8% between 2022 and 2023. This represented the highest annual growth rate since 2008. 
  • The number of households increased in every council area in the last twenty years. 
  • Of the 2.72 million dwellings in Scotland in 2023, 92,500 (3%) were vacant and 24,000 (1%) were second homes. 
  • According to census data average household size in Scotland decreased from 2.27 people per household in 2001 to 2.12 in 2022. 
  • At the time of the 2022 Census more than a third (37%) of households comprised one person living alone. A total of 930,000 people lived in these households.
