Kirkwood's plan and elevation of the New Town of Edinburgh provides a clear and detailed record of how the city had developed by the early 19th century. James Craig’s plan had been to create a residential only area with no commercial properties, however by the time of this plan they were slowly becoming established on Princes Street.
