Old Parish Death Register

 

William Coulter, the Lord Provost of Edinburgh, died in office in 1810 and is buried in Greyfriar's Kirk Yard, Edinburgh.  This page, part of his death entry in the Old Parish Register, Edinburgh, records details of the funeral service and symbolisim included in the event:  'A Person, in deep Mourning, Bare-headed, bearing the Rod of Office levelled before him... the Lord Provost's robe carried by the City's Wardrope Keeper...six horses decorated with the City Arms.'
