Soldiers of the Blackwatch (Royal Highlanders) in front of the Great Pyramid and sphinx

This photograph was taken after the battle of Tel-el-Kebir in September 1882. The battle, fought between the the Egyptian army and British military, arised from the British protecting their interests in the Suez Canal following a rebellion by Egyptian officers under the command of Ahmed 'Urabi.
